Maths at Temple Mill

At Temple Mill, fluency, reasoning and problem solving are the foundations of all of our Maths learning. All year groups use the concrete, pictorial, abstract approach, in line with the White Rose Maths scheme, to deepen their knowledge and allow them to reason and problem solve effectively and with confidence. The White Rose curriculum is tailored in each year group more specifically to the needs of the children in each class.

Maths in Early Years

The White Rose Maths Mastery approach supports the ethos of the Early Years whilst at the same time allowing teachers to create a mathematically rich curriculum. Key concepts are revisited and developed further throughout the year. It has been divided into ten phases which provides a variety of opportunities to develop the understanding of number, shape, measure and spatial thinking. Maths learning in Early Years isn’t always through a formal lesson and also includes number rhymes, songs, games, short teacher led activities. Opportunities are given for children to practise new skills through continuous provision, independently and with adult support.

Mastering Number Approach – NCETM

Children in Early Years and Key Stage One also use the Mastering Number Approach by NCETM, alongside their Maths lessons, to develop children’s fluency in calculation and a flexibility with number that exemplifies good number sense. This supports children in being able to clearly communicate their mathematical ideas and make progress towards the Early Learning Goals (EYFS) and expectations for their current year group. This approach works on demonstrating children’s willingness to ‘have a go’. White Rose Maths – KS1 & KS2

The White Rose Maths Mastery approach to teaching and learning has number at its heart and a large proportion of the time is spent reinforcing number to build competency and focuses on deepening children’s understanding and depth of the Maths curriculum, rather than breadth. All children have the opportunity to work independently and with others to reasoning and problem solve to further develop their understanding of key concepts. Children begin by revisiting and consolidating previous learning to ensure their knowledge is secure before using these as building blocks for new mathematical concepts.

As a school, we believe that when we are introducing a new concept to children, they should have the opportunity to build competency by following the Concrete – Pictoral – Abstract approach. They should begin by using concrete objects and manipulatives to help them understand the new concept they are using. Then they will begin using pictorial representations before moving onto a more abstract method.

Home Learning

All children in Year 1 to Year 6 will use Sumdog as part of their Maths Home Learning. Every child will have their own username and password to access their personalised learning area where the learning is tailored to each child individually. Sumdog provides children with personalised practice and low-stakes tests which they enjoy and are able to earn coins on which they are then able to exchange for pets on their dashboard. Through playing games, quizzes, challenges and short assessments, teachers are able to identify gaps and build fluency using Sumdog’s games which are in line with the National Curriculum. Sumdog is independently proven to almost double children’s fluency with just 30 minutes of practice each week.

  • Maths Frame - Multiplication Tables Check
    This activity exactly mirrors the 'Multiplication Tables Check' that will be given to children at the end of Year 4. They are tested on their multiplication tables up to 12 x 12. There are twenty-five questions and children have six seconds to answer each question and three seconds between questions. The questions are generated randomly using the same rules as the 'Multiplication Tables Check'. Results can be downloaded and printed at the end of the test
